SMC Descent Control 8

$95.00

The classic descender for ropework, the Figure 8 is perhaps the most widely recognized component of all vertical gear.  Exceptional control of starting acceleration, rappelling speed, and deceleration for stopping, plus light weight and tough, stainless steel wear resistant surfaces are the main features of this unique descender.  This descender performs well in repetative rappelling environments, such as rescue training.  Designed for use on ropes up to 1/2″ in size, the wide “shoulders” help to prevent formation of a girth hitch when the rappeller’s weight is off the rope.  When descending, the unweighted end of the rope does not rub against the loop of rope passing around the neck of this descender, due to it’s unique shape. Use the small, bottom hole as a Stitch plate.   As with all SMC products, welding is done by certified welders, followed by a dye penetrant inspection to insure full compliance with SMC’s stringent Quality Assurance Standards.

This Figure 8 is capable of heavy use. Features include:
  • Machined from drop forged steel bar stock
  • Bright Chrome steel finish
  • Accepts rope up to 1/2″.
  • Weight: 212.6 g. (7.4 oz.)
  • MBS->20,000 lbf – (88.9kN)
*NOTE: Figure 8 descenders tend to violently twist and kink the rope during rappels, exacerbating the wear on the rope, especially between the core and the sheath of the rope.  This twisting and kinking suggests early retirement of the rope.  Likewise, these descenders are very small and do not dissipate heat very well.  High speed rappels are discouraged with Figure 8 descenders
