What is Micro-Shaving?

Micro-shaving is the process of removing manageable chunks of rock in a controlled manner.  Basically, a hole is drilled, cleaned, then loaded with 1-2 of our power loads.  The safety pad is centered over the hole and the held in place by the detonator firing pin.  After adequate safety measures have been taken, a couple of whacks with the hammer and BANG!  You have fractured the rock in several ways.

 

Who uses Micro-Shaving?
Our micro-shaving kits are used by Search and Rescue teams, Commercial Cave owners (for trail modification), Geologists, Excavators, Contractors, Sculptors and Caving expeditions. 
 
Is it safe to use & do I need a license?
When used properly, our micro-shaver is extremely safe.  The power loads are available from On Rope 1 and do not require a special license.

The OR1 Micro-Shaving Kit includes the following:

  • Micro-shaving detonator with lanyard
  • Spare firing pin (Grade 8 Steel)
  • Chisel to remove loose rock
  • 5/16″ x 6″ SDS bit – fits any SDS power drill, Petzl Rocpecker (P26), or the Fixe hand drill (FS371)
  • Blow tube to clear dust
  • Safety pad
  • 25 power loads in a waterproof bottle

Using this kit might allow some explorers to find new cave where the map currently says, “Too Tight.” 
 
Always wear  eye protection, heavy clothes and gloves during micro-shaving.  Hearing protection is also recommended, but not required. .
